Once I Dreamed of Camels

because i want to believe

didn’t she ramble

It was hot the day she died. That end-of-spring hot when the seasons morph and the sun is ablaze, freshening the memory of nurture when Sun pooled light bathing glory onto the pyramids of Giza.

Languishing in searing heat, I welcome the mist of after-dream that teases when the night comes. the Great Sphinx of memory breathes scorched air into lungs that never existed, stretches wide lips that never opened, chuckles into waves of sand blown gently by winds whispering the adoration of golden heat.

cooled to midnight blue by the rise of two moons (there are always two moons) lighting the way for journeys, potentially arduous, definitely adventurous, possibly dangerous, trailing from arid desert sands to waters dappled by moonlight.

a distant shoreline beckons. an unknown city awaits.

majestic beasts of burden come hither, a legendary promenade of grace and promise, walking the water in perfect harmony with the call of tomorrow innate to every living sea.

i place my hands on stalwart hips, gratefully anticipating the arrival of my salvation; the relief of burdens i have worn like armor

the camels are a gift from my dear sister, dead and gone too soon (Shelia, I love u).

thinker knows

i pat the fierceness of pink in my afro and plant a thousand kisses in the air to settle on my dead sister’s cheeks. beyond the light of two moons (there are always two moons), my sister smiles knowing i am armed and ready now for whatever next will come.
